Christmas Is Not About Your Relationship Status

Jesus Is The Reason For The Season
This time last year, I was in a very loving relationship. This year I’m not. I’m single. What a difference a year makes. For many singles, this time of year sucks because you don’t have a significant other. Well, guess what, as the title of this post says, Christmas is not about your relationship status and it never will be. Christmas is about the birth of Jesus Christ and the sacrifice he made for you to enjoy this season whether single or married. Jesus is the reason for the season.

I Made It Happen
So what you’re single? You can still enjoy the Christmas season in a big way. One of the things I’ve done so far that brought merriment to my soul is participate in Operation Christmas Child; a program run by Samaritan’s Purse. Year after year, I say I’m going to participate and never do. This year was different. I was intentional about participating and I made it happen.

Christmas
The Good Samaritan
Samaritans Purse is a nondenominational evangelical Christian organization providing spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world. Since 1970, Samaritan’s Purse has helped meet needs of people who are victims of war, poverty, natural disasters, disease, and famine with the purpose of sharing God’s love through His Son, Jesus Christ. The organization serves the church worldwide to promote the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and the name is rooted in the story of The Good Samaritan found in Luke 10:30-37:

30“A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii[a] and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

Go And Do Likewise
The program Operation Christmas Child sends gifts to kids all around the world who otherwise would not receive a gift. Like the Good Samaritan, it’s a way for us to go and do likewise. Here’s how it works:

  • Decide if you want to shop for a boy or girl and the age of the child
  • Wrap and pack a shoe box
  • Purchase a $9 Follow Your Box Label
  • Drop off at distribution center

As If She Were My Own
I had so much fun shopping and picking out items to fill my shoe box for a girl between the ages of 10-14. With my list in hand of suggested gift ideas, I went shopping for her as if she were my own. I filled her box with every school supply she will ever need, a compact mirror to look at her beautiful face, toiletries, games, puzzles, and so much more.

Her Heart Would Be Blessed
I also included a card with a note and a stamped envelope just in case she wants to write. Lastly, I prayed over the box that it would arrive well and intact. I also prayed that her heart would be blessed knowing that someone in this big old world loves her just as much as Jesus does.

Give Our Lives Away
This is what Christmas is all about. Jesus gave and now we his children are to go out into the world and give our lives away as a shining example of his love. Your relationship status ain’t got nothing to do with that. Contrary to every message society sends, you don’t need to be coupled up to have a merry Christmas.

It’s A Blessing To Be A Blessing
As God gives me strength and continues to supply all my needs, I plan to participate in Operation Christmas Child until I take my last breath. It’s a blessing to be a blessing. Thanks to the tracking label, I will find out in a couple of weeks where in the world my box lands. I cannot wait!

The Real Meaning Of Christmas
In closing, I leave you with this; if you take the time to remember the real meaning of Christmas, it will be merry no matter your relationship status.
Christmas

Hi Yvonne, I love how you draw our thoughts back to the real meaning of Christmas and reveal how giving to someone has enhanced your appreciation of Jesus being the Gift for us. Samaritans Purse is a great organisation to support. We have a yearly shoe box appeal at our church for Russia and Romanian orphanages and it’s always a joy to help young ones in this special way. May God continue to bless you as you are blessing others!

@Joy,

We desperately need to be reminded of the real meaning of Christmas. Jesus gave the ultimate gift to us and for us. My church does a yearly shoe box appeal every year at Christmas time. It’s such a joy to be a blessing to others.

Merry Christmas to you…

“It’s a blessing to be a blessing.” What a great thought, Yvonne. I think it’s true in any kind of season of life that we’d rather not be in … when we focus on others instead of ourselves, we always find joy. Many blessings to you this holiday season! #RaRaLinkup

@Lois,

If we focus on ourselves too much, that alone will snatch all of our joy. Focusing on others and blessing others always blesses us in return.

How beautiful that you are giving out. I had a friend whose box recipient found her on Facebook and now they correspond. I hope your recipient will be able to write you back!

Great post.

I agree with doing some type of charity if you are single anytime, especially the holidays. It allows you to see how lucky you are in life.
