Condoms And Cigarettes Are Not Ministry Tools

Distributing Condoms And Cigarettes
Did you watch the premiere of The Preachers of Atlanta? I did and I was mad afterward.  What disturbed my soul to no end was one pastor in particular; Le’Andria Johson. Within five minutes of the episode, she was seen distributing condoms and cigarettes as a way to win souls to Christ.  In the video below, she says, “How can the world practice safe sex if the church can’t? Le’Andria, the church is not the world’s example of safe sex.  The church ought to be the world’s example of no sex until marriage which is that the Bible teaches. Watch the video and we’ll talk after…

In The World But Not Of The World
Where do I start with this? Listen, we are all sinners saved by grace, however, when you call yourself a pastor, you are expected to live and operate at a higher standard.  The Bible is clear, we, Christians are in the world but not of the world.  We are to look, act and be 100% different than anyone in the world.

Jesus Hung Out With Sinners
In her opening montage on the show, Le’Andria says, “I take it to the streets! I pass out condoms, cigarettes…I do all that. When God tells me to do something, I do it!” I’d like to know which God she hears because the God I serve, the God of the Bible, would never tell me or anyone of his children to dress like a prostitute or hand out condoms and cigarettes to win souls. The message of the Bible is powerful enough to transform lives without any additives.  We’re quick to bend scripture to suit our flawed behavior.  Yes, Jesus hung out with sinners but he never sinned while hanging out with sinners nor did he change his appearance and behavior.  He remained true to who he was and to his calling and to his message.

Express Bus To Hell
In the video, she says the cigarette recipients now attend her church.  Of course, they do!  They want more condoms and cigarettes and they know where they can get them for free.  Attending church has nothing to do with entering into a life-saving relationship with Jesus Christ which is all that matters when all is said and done.  There are LOTS of bad churches out there that will have you on an express bus to hell. You need to be in the right church and under the right teaching. Somehow, I don’t think Le’Andria’s church is it!

A Complete Fraud
Many churches today are a complete fraud. They’re not teaching the true uncompromised word if they’re teaching the word at all. Many black churches are filled with emotionalism and antics that make you feel so good that you keep on coming back yet nothing in your life has changed.  They’ve created an atmosphere that keeps you so comfortable in your sin that’s it’s no longer an issue.

Hooping And Hollering
I remember attending a popular black church led by a pastor on one of the other “Preachers Of” franchises. Everyone was “In the spirit” hooping and hollering, running around the building, sweating profusely and making a whole bunch of noise. The organist and the drummer chimed in on cue to keep the people amped up.  I felt like I should’ve worn a sweatsuit and sneakers to join in and do some jumping jacks or something.  One guy was carrying on so bad that I thought he was gonna snap his neck.

Living In Sin
When the pastor got up to speak, he continued the antics with a whole bunch of yelling, making weird noises, falling out and carrying on. Emotionalism to the nth degree! That was my first and last visit.  I learned nothing!  The MAJORITY of that very large congregation; including the pastor were living in sin. Going to church on Sunday for many in the black church has become a checklist item.  It’s about routine, not relationship.

World Of False Prophets
Call me judgmental if you will, however, if you read the Bible properly, Christians, have a right to judge the behavior of other Christians and call it out as wrong.  1 Corinthians 5:12-13 is clear when it says, “For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? God judges those outside. “Purge the evil person from among you.” Here’s more from Romans 16:17-18 which says, “I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive.” And yet there’s more from 1 John 4:1 which says, “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.” We are living in a world of false profits.

I Confronted The Pastor
Le’Andria and many “pastors” today know the congregations they lead are not consistently reading and studying the Bible, therefore, they can get up on the pulpit and say just about anything that sounds good without accountability. I’m reminded of a time when I attended a church and heard sermons and observed practices that were not biblical.   I was so confused by it all that I had no choice but to confront the pastor but first I called my brother (RIP Dalton), who was sound in doctrine to make sure I was on point with my thoughts, then I called a pastor colleague to confirm what my brother shared and then I confronted the pastor who couldn’t give me an answer.

Filling Church Pews
The Preachers of Atlanta were cast because of their unconventional and wildly different approach to ministry as they win souls to Christ. Are they winning souls to Christ or simply filling church pews?

Something to think about…

What say you? What do you think about a pastor passing out condoms and cigarettes? What are your thoughts on safe sex and the church?

I agree with you 100%. A co-worker of mine attends a church where they have a room in the church where they keep condoms and anyone can go in and get the condoms. I don’t attend this church but I called the church to let them know my concerns. A lady on the phone told me that the Bible teaches us to take care of our bodies. I asked he doesn’t passing out condoms contradict what the Bible teaches? I said the Bible teaches us not to have sex before marriage. She said married couples use condoms and I responded by asking were the condoms intended only for married couples. She paused and finally said no. Then I said isn’t that assisting in fornication? She had a nerve to say that I “could” look at it that way. Really? The Bible dosent tell us to have safe sex before we get married. I politely ended the conversation and she thanked me for calling and giving my opinion. My opinion? Really? “My” opinion? It’s not “my opinion” that is what the Bible says. Such a sad situation

Is passing out condoms at church a new thing? I went to a Bible study last month and afterwards, two ladies were walking around with baskets of condoms encouraging us to take them. She said black people have the highest risk of HIV and AIDS and we need to do everything to stop it. Passing out condoms is the church’s way of stopping it.

If this is a new thing, it needs to stop because as you said, we’re not supposed to be having sex outside of marriage.

That lady knew those condoms weren’t for married people! Married people wouldn’t come to a church to get condoms. She knew she was in the wrong!

I had a similar conversation with the condom lady at Bible study and she refused to see my point. It’s a very sad situation indeed.
