Cover It Up In Jesus Name

The Wait
Earlier today, a friend wanted to know if I was at One Church LA on Valentine’s Day when Devon Franklin and his wife Meagan Good did a talk to promote their new book The Wait.  Apparently the conversation got heated and she wanted to know my thoughts.  I used to go to One Church regularly but I wasn’t there.  During the Q&A portion of the program, a woman asked a question, well made a comment suggesting Meagan cover up.  Here’s what she said:

Woman: This is not offensive, but I was at the grocery store and I looked at a newsstand and saw you — and your breast showing.  So, so, I wasn’t gonna come here, I wasn’t, but the Lord brought me here to see you. You’re beautiful. You are a beautiful young woman and your testimony is awesome. It’s awesome. Amen. Amen! The Lord let me come and push past the judgment, because you have to make sure what you say and what you do match up, you understand?  So, we’re gonna cover up, right?

Devon: Wait a minute — no! No. Nuh-unh. That is not what we’re here for. She’s not gonna cover up, she gon’ wear what she wants to wear in the name of Jesus…amen. Amen? Amen. Yes, she will! God bless you, we love you, I love you dearly but she has been as Christian as she is right now when she wore whatever she wanted to wear, so no we ain’t doing that! Y’all about to see another Devon that y’all ain’t never seen! Remember, I’m from Oakland now!”

What’s Wrong With Covering Up?
I absolutely LOVED the way Devon stepped up to defend his wife.  The way he protected her in that moment and reaffirmed their love while continuing to make sure she was okay was a beautiful example of the deep love they share.  High five Devon.  Now that we got that out of the way, here’s my question; what’s wrong with covering up? And what does he mean by she’s gon wear whatever she wants to wear in Jesus name? I mean…We’re Christians.  We operate at a higher/different standard; well, at least we’re supposed to aren’t we?

Tempting Russell Wilson
And then there’s Ciara and Russell Wilson who are following Devon and Meagan’s path of practicing abstinence until marriage.  Ciara was blamed for tempting Russell Wilson with the dress she wore to the Grammys.  Yes, she is drop dead gorgeous and definitely has the body to pull it off but was that the best choice considering her walk of abstinence?  Considering her profession of faith? She recently told Cosmopolitan magazine how challenging abstinence is.  I can’t imagine wearing this dress makes it any easier.  Just sayin…

Look The Other Way!
When Cosmo asked Ciara how the whole abstinence thing is going, she said, “It’s going pretty good. We’re hanging in there. I’m not gonna lie. I’m human, so it is not easy, especially when I look at him and I think he is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen — that I’ve ever laid my eyes on, to be honest. I’m like, Look the other way! Look the other way!”  Russell might’ve needed blindfolds at the Grammys! P.S. when is he gonna propose? They’ve been dating 10 months!

Given The Masses Plenty To Talk About
Women like Ciara and Meagan get mad when others speak on their attire but both of these ladies have given the masses plenty to talk about with their style choices coupled with their profession of Christian faith.  People were wondering if Ciara had on underwear! No one would wonder about her undergarments if she didn’t put it out there like that.  People were also rumbling about whether she and Russell are really abstinent and there was mention that they apparently live together.

You Can Be A Sexy Christian
While writing this post, someone in my TL mentioned it on Twitter so I jumped in. Here are some bullet points from that convo:

Her relationship is between her and GOD. Not man. Shouldn’t matter what anyone THINKS.

Some women enjoy flaunting what they have been blessed with. We show confidence differently. Her showing her body is HER way. Why question it? It’s not bothering anyone and if so that’s their insecurity.

She IS a walking example ….you can be a sexy Christian

What Is The Point Of Professing Christianity?
Yes, her relationship is between her and God. Hopefully, as she grows and matures in that relationship, she will be convicted about her attire and be moved to cover it up.  Remember, Meagan Good always walked around leaving nothing to the imagination and no one said anything. They’re saying something now because of her bold profession of Christian faith. There’s an expectation of her to do better as there should be otherwise what is the point of professing Christianity?

Sexy Is A State Of Mind
And yes, you most certainly can be a sexy Christian, however, you can be very sexy without showing your body parts. Sexy is a state of mind. It’s inward and reflected outward.  It’s not about what you wear.  You can be sexy covered up in a business suit and you can be sexy in sweats and Chuck Taylor’s.  Attire has very little to do with being sexy.

Something to think about…

What say you? Are you a fan of if  you got it flaunt it no matter what? Should Christian women flaunt it? How do you define sexy? Does being a Christian mean you have to cover it up?

Here are 2 things I’d like you to do now:

Great post! I’m with you … we can still appear sexy with modesty. If we are going to be loud with our faith, we must follow it with our actions. And that includes all actions – how we love others, how we display ourselves, and the giving of all the glory to Jesus for who and what we are or do. Each of these young ladies do have their own walk with the Lord and I’m in no place to judge that whatsoever. As you said, maybe it is in the maturing that they will see these things.
Thanks so much!

Well said. “If we are going to be loud with our faith, we must follow it with our actions” and that includes how we dress. The world is watching!
