Gimme A Break I Sure Deserve It

by Yvonne Chase on September 2, 2019

I didn’t plan to take a break from blogging, however, that’s exactly what happened. Guess I needed it. A lot goes into uploading a weekly blog post; research that often leads to Bible study then there’s searching for the right images, SEO optimization, tags and of course coming up with a catchy title like this one; Childless And Single With No Reason To Live. P.S. that title scared some of my readers. They thought I fell off the wagon then breathed a sigh of relief once they realized it wasn’t about me. Sorry to do that to you, however, as we know, titles are what make people read…or not!

During the break, I took an intense four-week class that needed all of my time and focus. I learned a lot and I’m excited to see the results of what I’ve been implementing. Also did a lot of cooking, working out and enjoying the flow of life which is quite interesting these days. In this season of my life, God is showing me he’s all I need and I can trust him implicitly with every detail of my life. All things are working for my good. What is God showing you in this season of your life?

One thing I did that I don’t know why I did it other than the leading of the Holy Spirit was visit my mothers’ gravesite. Prior to her death, I never understood it when people told me they went to visit the gravesite of a loved one. The person is dead. They won’t know you’re there and they can’t see the beautiful flowers you place on the plot. What’s the point?

I called my friend Patrick who visits his mother from time to time to ask him why he goes and what happens when he goes. Didn’t come away with much from that conversation other than the peace he feels during and after. Be that as it may, it had been on my heart to go so I went. There’s a bench near her plot where I sat for a little while and then left. I’m sure the reason I was led to visit will be revealed to me in due time.

When my mother died three years ago yesterday 9/1/16, someone told me she would visit me. I had no idea what they meant until she visited me two years ago. She stalked me for five days straight and then disappeared. When it was happening, I was freaked out by it all and had no idea what was happening but then, later on, it became very clear to me why her spirit was on me during that time. As I’ve said before, we live life forward and understand it backward. My mother is definitely watching over me is all I will say about that stalking episode for now and I am 100% grateful for that experience. One day I’ll say more…

Talk about visiting, I visited a new church during the break that does something I really like and I believe other churches ought to try. In an effort to build community and do life together as God calls us to, they created dinner parties aka DPs that meet weekly in someone’s home. To date, they have over 70 DP’s meeting across the tristate area. Here’s how it works; everyone brings something to accommodate the main dish and we gather for a time of fellowship, food, and fun. During the evening, we also take time to discuss the message from the previous week, share praise reports and offer up prayer requests. WhatsApp groups are created for each DP to keep in touch and further foster friendships.

I think other churches, especially mega-churches where people tend to feel lost ought to follow this lead and implement DPs. Serving at church is great, however, something different happens when we meet at home. We really let our hair down and there’s a freedom that just isn’t there when we’re at church. What do you think?

Netflix offered a free 30-day trial so I signed up and watched a bunch of movies; Crazy Rich Asians; fun, Always Be My Maybe; cute, When They See Us had my emotions in a knot, Sextuplets; silly, Falling Inn Love; corny yet enjoyable. I like comedy and tried to watch a few specials but couldn’t deal with the profanity of it all. There’s a whole bunch of nothing on Netflix so I canceled. I’m the only person I know who doesn’t have a Netflix account. Do you have one? What do you watch?

If you’re new to this space, I write about living single, dating and marriage and sometimes I write about family all through the lens of my faith in Jesus Christ. To mix it up at times and give you an opportunity to know me in a deeper way, I include posts like this; 25 Things You Don’t Know About Me. See you next Monday with a brand new post.

Something to think about…

What say you? Have you ever taken a break from blogging? Why? What did you do during the break? Did the break make you a better blogger? What are your thoughts on visiting gravesites? What is God showing you in this season of your life?

Here are 2 things I’d like you to do now:

1. Leave a comment below

2. Share this post if you like it

I did take a blogging break for 8 months when life got in the way and I had too much on my plate. My blog was getting stale anyway and I gained new insights from the break.

God is so faithful to show us exactly what we need! I love the DP idea! We are doing something similar with groups of women using the IF:table method. It’s fantastic!

Yes, I’m all for any method that opens the door to us functioning as the body of Christ ought to. Going to Google the IF table method to see what that’s all about. Thanks for sharing.

Welcome back to the blogging world, Yvonne. I had a similar experience with my mom after she passed away 10 years ago. I had been trying to qualify for the Boston Marathon without success. I ran a qualifying marathon the May after she died, on her birthday. I felt like she was watching over me and cheering me on the whole race. I finally qualified. I think Mom is my guradian angel! 🙂

Thanks for sharing your experience. Yes, I too, think she’s my guardian angel especially because of that instance. She made sure I followed through on a decision and I’m so glad I did.

Every once in a while, a break is the only sanity-saving option. Glad to have you back, and I grinned at your thoughts on titles, clearly the most challenging part of writing ANYTHING!

Sanity saving option indeed and yes, coming up with a great title can be so challenging at times yet it’s so necessary to the overall process.

So good to meet you this morning, Yvonne! Yep, taking a break from blogging is often exactly what we need to breathe fresh life into our dailyness …

Yvonne Chase September 3, 2019

Happy to meet you too. And yes, breathing fresh life into the dailyness of life is so necessary yet we often don’t take the time to do so. Glad I did!

I love the dinner party idea. And I don’t have Netflix. And I just sang that theme song in your title last week to a young coworker who had never heard of the show!

I was wondering if anyone would pick up on the connection between the title and the TV show. You get a prize!

Glad you were able to do some great things during your time away, Yvonne. I love the idea of DPs. Simple but what a great way to help people get to know each other. I used to visit my daughter’s gravesite a LOT the first few years after she died. It helped me feel close to her. I don’t visit as often now, but I do go back at least yearly, for my own sake.

Neil September 3, 2019

It sounds like your break from blogging went well. Whilst not necessarily on a break myself I am conscious I’m not as active as I was when I started out a couple of years ago. Life seems to get in the way a lot of the time and I try not to put too much pressure on myself to write. Which seems to be working so far…. #dreamteam

Taking a break in necessary, I have found it is as easy as change from doing one thing to another. Condolences on your mother, and I believe the Lord could allow comforting, that is a blessing but I hate to see people falling into false practices and grief. Praying the Holy Spirit’s discernment for you and His peace.

Jeanne Takenaka September 3, 2019

Yvonne, I had fun reading your post. Right now, God is teaching me a lot about faith over fear. I may blog about this down the road. 🙂 I don’t have Netflix…never have. It was interesting to read that you didn’t find much worthwhile to watch on it. I really enjoyed Crazy, Rich Asians.

And blogging breaks? Yes, I take them. I have begun a tradition of taking them through most of December because it’s such a crazy time of year. And, I’ve taken them at other times when real-life needed more of me than was available while blogging, if that makes sense. Breaks are a good thing!

I look forward to reading your posts about faith over fear. That’s a struggle for many of us, myself included.

Netflix is a waste of money.

And yes, breaks are a good thing. December sounds like a great time to take one. It’s the holidays and many are involved with the festivities of it all.

Welcome back! I have never taken more than a couple of weeks break at one time. I do consider it from time to time in order to regroup and listen in to what God is telling me to do next. Thank you for linking up at Tell His Story.

I only started my blog just over a year ago so I’ve not had a break as such. But sometimes life (with 3 small boys) gets in the way and I don’t post for a while! When They See Us made me feel so anxious! #DreamTeam
