Hello readers, what’s been the best part of your New Year so far? I smiled from ear to ear when I looked down at my phone and saw a happy new year text from Sergey, my former neighbor. That text made the first day of 2020 great! Sergey and I lived on the same floor and became friends one day when I said hello. I moved out of the building four years ago yet remained in the neighborhood one block over. We’d see each other from time to time in the building when I lived there and around the neighborhood after I moved.
I recall a summer Sunday when Sergey and I took a stroll through Prospect Park. I don’t know what it was or is, however, we are always beyond happy to see each other. Tight hugs followed by a kiss on each cheek is how we greet and bid each other farewell. Our time together was always filled with lots of belly-aching laughter as I tried to help him speak and understand the English language.
When his text came through, I was shocked because our last text exchange was in 2017. I was even more shocked that he text me from Moscow where he’s spending time visiting his family. He talked often about his love for his family and how much he loves going back home to see them. I want more people like Sergey in my life in 2020; happy people who bring happiness and joy to my life. We have plans to meet up when he returns to NY. I cannot wait! It’s the little things that do it for me and really this is a big thing that he thought about me and reached out from across the pond.
As I move forward on the first day of this new year, I don’t know what 2020 holds, however, I do know who holds it. Because I know who holds it, I know it will be a great year. God is faithful. He cannot lie. He keeps his promises to me no matter what. He’s great. He’s awesome. I’m so glad he’s the head of my life. If you don’t have a relationship with Jesus Christ, I suggest you get one today because you will need it in the coming days.
How did you bring in the new year? I brought in the New Year at the best place in the world; God’s house. While waiting for the service to begin, I sat in the balcony lobby and talked to Camille; my sister-friend in Christ. We became friends when she was an usher. She was so nice to me and always found me a great seat.
We talked about what I’m currently facing in my life and I learned she knows my family. Not only does she know them, she knows them very well. As she listened, she said to me, “My head is spinning at what you’re going through” and she kept repeating, “Gods got something for you. Gods got something for you. Gods got something for you because man, you are going through it.” She continued with, “I’m shocked that I know your people. We go way back. I had no idea what I was gonna hear when I sat down to catch up but wow! Small world.”
If I had to pick a song that speaks to my life and specifically my current circumstance, it would be God Favored Me by Hezekiah Walker. Press play below to listen…
I gotta tell you, music is a huge part of my life. Singing it and listening to it has gotten me through the roughest days. Artists like Kirk Franklin, Alvin Slaughter, John P. Kee, Donnie McClurkin, The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir and a host of others are the reason I’m in my right mind today. I’m currently jamming to 123 Victory by Kirk Franklin as I write this post. The hook says:
Hey yo, 123Kirk Franklin
Get up we got victory
No weapon they throw at me
You know it won’t prosper
Know this; weapons will be formed against you and me in 2020 no different than they were in 2019 but guess what, if you have a relationship with God through Jesus Christ, not one of those weapons will ever prosper. So, I’m going into 2020 knowing beyond the shadow of a doubt that no matter what comes my way, I have the victory because God favors me and no matter which way the wind blows, as Hezekiah Walker and John P. Kee sing, it’s gonna work in my favor. I’m beyond excited to see God show up and show out in my life!
Something to think about…
What say you? How are you going into 2020? What song/s keep you going when the going gets tough? What role if any does music play in your life? What’s been the best part of your New Year so far? Do you have a Sergey in your life?
