Three Homeless Men And Three Dollar Bills Changed My Life

by Yvonne Chase on August 22, 2017

On A Natural High
It’s 12:23 am and I can’t sleep. I can’t sleep because I just came in from the best night ever and I’m on a natural high that all started when I asked three homeless men, “Why are you homeless?  Let me rewind the tape and tell you how it all began. Stephen Baars, a Rabbi, leads a seminar called Bliss every Monday in Manhattan. I found out about Stephen through my colleague Rebecca. Last year I attended Bliss and added my name to his email list.

Felt Out Of Sorts
I was supposed to attend last weeks seminar, however, my appointment with Rebecca ran over. Through a series of emails to Stephen to apologize for not making it, I asked him if he’d be willing to meet with me. I was at a point in my life where I felt out of sorts and something in my spirit said talk to Stephen. I obeyed and we met up to talk. Watch the video below and we’ll talk after…

Reach Out And Touch
As I said in the video, I gave each of the three men $1 and I received so much more in return. They touched my heart in a way that it hadn’t been touched in a very long time. It’s good to step outside of ourselves every once in a while to reach out and touch someone. Our lives would be so much more enriched if we did this more often.

Laughed Like Old Friends
I’m still thinking about my conversation with Ray. We talked and laughed like old friends. Roberto not remembering his birthday or his age saddened me. If only William had the support and encouragement he needed to finish up that last year of college. Can’t help but wonder if his life would be different.

Finish What We Start
His story took me back to my college days when I wanted to take a break. I was working full-time and going to school full-time plus doing two internships on the weekend. It was too much. I was exhausted! My mother wasn’t having it. She said you will take a break when you graduate. If you take a break now, you might not go back.  I’m so glad she stayed on me to the end. My friend Cynthia took a break and regrets never going back. We all need that push, that encouragement, that person who steps in, to make sure we finish what we start. Thanks, Mom!

Let It Flow
When I sat down with Stephen, I didn’t know what to expect. I didn’t know what he would say or what he’d think. I barely knew what I was going to say. Didn’t have it all planned out. I just let it flow and hoped it all made sense.

Beauty And Blessings
I’m glad he took the time to listen to me and I’m eternally grateful for that assignment. My life is good. I’m blessed. Sure life doesn’t always go the way we planned but God still has a good plan for our lives. Sometimes we focus so much on what didn’t turn out right that we miss out on all of the beauty and blessings in front of us.

A Great Reminder
It’s so easy at times to focus on the challenges of life instead of counting our blessings. Those days are over. It’s all about counting my blessings and naming them one by one. Roberto, Ray, and William were a great reminder. The next time I feel out of sorts, I will reflect on my time with the three homeless men who came into my life at the right time.

Forgive Me
The one thing that bothered me the most is how quickly I found Roberto, Ray, and William. I only spoke to three homeless men, however, I must’ve passed at least ten in a one block radius. These things ought not to be so. As I type this blog from my bed, I ask God to forgive me for complaining about any area of my life. Tonight and every night, Roberto, Ray, and William make their beds on the streets of NYC. For me…

Something to think about…

What say you? When was the last time you took your eyes off of your life to reach out and touch someone? Are you overdue? How important is it to do this often? What’s the homeless population like in your neck of the woods?

Wow, Yvonne, Great post and video. Yes, we often focus on our challenges instead of our blessings! Love that Scripture in Psalm 23. For most of us, our cup overflows with physical and spiritual blessings…we are rich in Christ. Thanks for sharing your story. Tweeted and pinned.

You are so right. For most of us, our cup does overflow with more than enough of what we need. We are indeed rich in Christ. What a blessing…

Hi Yvonne! Boy, am I glad for the stop here today. What a neat experience, and thank you for sharing it. You’re causing me to pause a bit here… All good! I’ll be sharing this with my college-aged son. I’d love to say he needs it, but it’s likely that I need it just as much or more. Praise the Lord for all the blessings He surrounds us with. #raralinkup

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for sharing it with your college son. We need it as much as he needs it and that is why I shared it. It’s time to count our blessings and name the one by one.

Great post and a challenge for all of us to look into helping others rather than always looking to be helped.

We had a similar encountered with a homeless family. A homeless momma and two boys that lived out of their car. We reached out in love to give them money, but spent the next couple of hours in the parking lot praying, sharing the love of Jesus, and singing! My heart was so broken and so full at the same time! Thanks so much for sharing! Visiting today from #Livefree

When my children were younger I made a point to reach out to others as often as I could to set a good example. I now see them doing the same in their lives. To whom much is given, much is required! Thanks for sharing at The Blogger’s Pit Stop! Roseann from
